PlayStation has resumed activity on Facebook and Instagram after a two month hiatus from the platforms. Sony boycotted sponsored and non-sponsored posts on the platform after adding its voice to the #StopHateForProfit campaign, which was also backed by other juggernauts like Coca-Cola, Ford, and Starbucks. The companies want Facebook to improve its approach to hate speech.
Originally, the manufacturer had intended to take a one month hiatus from the platforms, but it’s ended up being two. It’s wasted no time promoting the PlayStation 5 on both of its official pages, as it gears up for the next-gen console’s release later in the year. Considering it commands extraordinary reach on both platforms, the boycott was never going to last forever.

Morals are all well and good for companies like Sony but they have a product to sell. Profit comes before making a real difference. Ironically, they don’t even have any new concrete information to share on Facebook or Instagram.
@nessisonett so them doing this suggests they soon will have.
@SirAngry Well, lol, yeah. There is only four months left in the year so I imagine there is info coming.
It’s because they are waiting for Xbox to reveal first on price so they can counter. Which as previously explained I’m not entirely sure why? As yet again the Xbox marketing is a bit of a mess again, and the ps5 is favoured console.
@jamberino93 I think they want to eliminate the competition this time so they're going all out.
They probably got worried after the nvidia announcement today and realised people are moving away.
And it achieved absolutely nothing.
They really should drop these platforms all-together. Who on earth uses them and would also be using these platforms as their only news sources for gaming?
This whole waiting to see who announces price first thing is nonsense. They know how much these things cost and how much of a hit they are willing / able to take. Given both have pretty much revealed what they are shoving inside these boxes they almost certainly know each others wiggle room. Xbox and Game Pass have lost Microsoft billions and billions. Share holders are already asking questions about when the division is going to be profitable. Sony likewise have shareholders to think about, if Sony or Microsoft launch at a price point the other can't match, quite frankly it makes no difference waiting, and even if they don't, it makes no difference waiting. Both by now will have locked in prices, they know they're going to have to air ship the initial batches and swallow that cost. They aren't waiting to undercut their competitors, they're waiting because I think neither truly know if they can commit to a full global launch in 2020.
StopHateforProfit! Oh wait...we might lose profit! It's a superficial gesture, and it makes me wonder why anyone even bothered in the first place.
@Kefka2589 @SirAngry Absolutely. Too many gamers have this one-dimensional world view that Sony only cares about Microsoft and the console wars and vice versa. Wake up, there's more going on in the world in 2020 than petty console wars. I tried to explain it in some thread over on the NL forums, but they wanted their CONSOLEWARZ.
@Kefka2589 Yeah, significantly more powerful than either console for $500, let alone any of the higher end cards.
Going for a 3090 myself.
@Menchi I’m honestly waiting for the catch, it’s a monster card for that price. They must have pulled some crazy strings production-wise for that to be a feasible price.
@nessisonett I'm not entirely shocked, 1st series is always just proof of concept (RTX2000) while 2nd is always a large refinement (RTX3000).
Just in time to "celebrate" how Facebook decided to not ban a militia group until they got people killed. Not good timing.
This just reinforces my opinion that it's really hard to not be on Facebook. Just about everything is geared towards it to the point that it's about like not having a cellphone.
Don't get me wrong, I know it's possible; I'm not on Facebook and I recently cancelled my mobile plan because it's pretty pointless when you never leave your house. But it certainly leaves one feeling quite unmoored from the rest of society.
I can only imagine how the pressure to be on social media is further ratcheted up if you have a business.
@Kefka2589 Still the price of a complete console.
Facebook is only as good or bad as what you use it for!
I'm on Facebook, I have 50 people on my friends list 48 are family members 2 are co-workers! I can go a month without even going to Facebook. I get notifications If I see something I want to find out about I will check it out. I checked out PlayStation post more then anything else when they were active on the platform. I liked that I could share my activities on Facebook like trophies.
It's a weird one. The move absolutely will have impacted Facebook, but evidently no where near enough to make any meaningful change.
The reality is that Sony has absolutely gigantic followings on these platforms, and they need to leverage it to promote their upcoming product.
Sucks really.
@Trajan RTX 30XX are not competition to consoles. There is a huge difference in price range. Then let's compare game of the year on each platform. Lets face it consoles are the best bag for your money. That includes both PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
@JohnKarnes They’re not starting some sort of console war, calm yourself. This new graphics card is really quite impressive for its price and will outperform these new consoles, this is fact. You’re forgetting the many, many exclusives that PC has and also certain games controlling better with M&KB. For enthusiasts, PC is a valid choice same as console is for more casual gamers or those on a budget. It’s the difference between investing in sound equipment and using Spotify, some people want ease of access and the best deal, some people want the best quality and long-lasting products with the potential to upgrade. There’s no point shouting down any console, people can buy whatever they want as they must have found value in it somewhere.
@JohnKarnes I'm gonna have to emphatically disagree that Facebook is as benign (or neutral) as you make it out to be.
On the other hand, I definitely agree with your assessment that consoles are ultimately a better value for your money. Not for everyone, I suppose, but on the whole.
Just more corporate ridiculousness.
Brands should just make products, not fake moral lessons.
I guess Sony needs Facebook more than they let it seem if they are back on it. Now I know hate speeches are bad, but what about speeches about hating Facebook?
@SirAngry
It's a 'meme that gets created by people who are too caught up in device competition..."
😎🤷♂️
Haha no, it's not fiction
@nessisonett I am calm I have been a life long PC gamer from Commodore Vic 20 days. I owned a IBM X286 today I have a I7 and GTX 1970Ti in my PC. I did pay $449, for my 1070Ti when it was new. My PS1 PS2 that i bought for my kids and PS3 I bought mostly for it blu-ray player all still work today. I don't see quality as a issue.
I don't have any issues with any platform. It's the fact that I play on my $399 PS4 Pro on my $259 TCL 4k HDR 43" TV all for $658 in bright and beautiful gaming happiness! Makes me give it my Best Bang for your Buck award!
@Kefka2589 It's been shown running games at 8k 60fps with high settings and raytracing, so yeah it's a beast lol
I won't be playing in 8k so my performance will be SOLID
@get2sammyb Eeeer... SONY is promoting their product? Where? Show me? whole marketing of SONY is not a clown, it's whole circus! It is bigger comedy than this year's Ferrari in F1... While they are repeating round and round same 3 things, I more and more smell rotten fish. There is something huge screw up thing about PS5, because if not, than there is no need for this "roundabout" cover operation.
@zupertramp what reasons do you have and how does it effect me?
Glad to see Sony sticking to its morals with the boycott.
Oh no wait, we’ve got a console to flog in 2 months time better get back on that social media!
@Kefka2589 if they are going to use air freight for initial batches then they have to factor in potential quarantines for things coming from China that the mentalist in the White House might decide will help him get a few more votes. The logistics of a global console launch during a pandemic must be a nightmare. There's just so much "not normal" about 2020 that I wouldn't be surprised to see a limited launch in one territory, followed by staggered launches elsewhere, even if they do have stockpiles in warehouses. Getting them into people's hands right now seems harder than making the things.
@JJ2 yeah console wars... thanks Sega of America for inventing that nonsense. All this "my plastic box I've pledged my allegiance to is more floppy" rubbish does my head in... mostly because neither Microsoft or Sony are paying these tools to be PR representatives. How deranged must you be to literally do free labour for multi-billion dollar corporations?
@SirAngry They're knownnas corporate slaves in the gaming community
@Kidfried I very rarely get involved in these sorts of discussions, and when I do it is mostly to clear up technical misunderstandings about both consoles. Some of the rampant drivel I've heard spouted about both has made me want to gouge my own eyes out with a rusty spoon.
@Menchi interesting, in my circles we call them shill boys. When I look at gaming as a sector / industry I think doing the marketing and PR must be a cinch. The amount of people who are so invested in the brand's and games that they will literally go do guerilla marketing campaigns for them is phenomenal. Throw in a generally complicit and compliant games media that on the whole just regurgitates press releases verbatim without any critical thought applied, and you probably have one of the most lopsided marketing environments going.
Of course they're back, they need to soften Nvidias blow with their 3000 graphics card series. Anyone seen the reveal? I'm not much of a gamer anymore but price and performance are just crazy good. I bet secretely Sony and MS are wishing they went with NVIDIA instead of AMD.
That said I'm a huge AMD fan.
They are most likely going to spend more on advertising the PS5 on Facebook this christmas.
So the money they didn't give to Facebook these last 2 months will be spent then instead.
@SirAngry
Oh yes I agree..
However my comment was mostly sarcasm about companies pretending they dont play that game, blame their fan base fanatics, and openly lie with their virtue signalling.
About the price you were talking about, yes they play that chicken game. If anything, look at the AMD tricks they publicly admitted last year to understand it's not fiction.
Edit
Quote was from Spencer about xb1 not holding back SX for ref if you didnt catch that. Just found it funny and can summarise most of the BS (from companies and press) we see these days.
Of course it's not going to last forever because money is involved 🤑🤑 they boycott when they see fit but go back to Facebook when they need the promotion 🙄
@Kefka2589 Yes but lets be honest its not for everyone. If you like your consoles its not like you are going too jump ship because of that. Consoles plug and play and a lot cheaper. And you need more than that card too play
@JohnKarnes The short answer: The way it currently functions, it's invasive and destructive.
My biggest complaint is this ability to monitor what you do on the internet outside of their platform. And this goes for users and non-users alike so I don't even know how much good it does to opt out of FB. They probably know more about our wants and desires than we do and they can sell that to whoever, which I find a little disturbing.
Not to mention the way it fosters, and thrives off of, our collective discontent. It's basically destroying civilized discourse (along with twitter) which kind of feels like something that impacts us all.
Still, given the direction of the thread, I'm really not looking to stir up an argument. If FB works for you, or anyone else, great. It is what it is and we can totally agree to disagree. Would have been nice to see Sony hold out a little longer but oh well, Facebook endures and life goes on.
@zupertramp I use anti trackers and anti ad's on my PC. here is who tries to track me on this site.
1.Google AdSense
2.Double Click
3.Amazon Associates
4.Google Ads Measurements
5.Google Analytics
6.Score Card Research Beacon
7.Ga Audiences
I do allow them here along with the side bar adds to support PushSquare. I do block facebook, Youtube, Netflix, Amazon and mostly all other trackers and Ads.
Everyone should do what they feel is best for themselves. Kudos to you for standing strong. This is nothing against you I just want to show how I feel I protect myself.
